Thyroid disease/tumors

The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the neck which regulates many of the body’s most important functions. Thyroid disease and tumors can cause a variety of health problems that interfere with daily life. Douglas Anderson, MD is familiar with these issues and can diagnose and treat patients throughout the state of Utah.

Types of Thyroid Disease and Tumors

• Hypothyroidism: This condition results from an underactive thyroid which does not produce enough of the thyroid hormone to regulate the body’s functions. Patients with hypothyroidism may experience disruptions in body temperature, energy levels, metabolism, and heart rate. The most common treatment for hypothyroidism is thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
   
• Hyperthyroidism: Hyperthyroidism is characterized by an overproduction of the thyroid hormone. This can result in symptoms such as sudden weight loss, rapid heartbeat, irritability, and an increased metabolism. Treatment options include medications and sometimes, surgery.
   
• Thyroiditis: Inflammation of the thyroid gland is known as thyroiditis. Symptoms can at first look like hyperthyroidism, but as the inflammation impairs thyroid function, it can begin to look like hypothyroidism. Depending on the state of the inflammation, a patient may experience little to no symptoms, or constant problems. To treat thyroiditis, your doctor will focus on its underlying causes while attempting to regulate thyroid function.
   
• Thyroid nodules: A thyroid nodule is a lump that is found in the thyroid gland that is solid or filled with fluid. Most thyroid nodules do not cause any symptoms or require any treatment. In some cases though, large nodules or cancerous nodules will require more aggressive treatment options such as medication or surgery.
   
• Thyroid cancer: When there are abnormal growths or tumors on the thyroid, it might be thyroid cancer. While the exact cause of thyroid cancer is not known, it is often related to environmental and genetic factors. Treatment options for thyroid cancer include hormone therapy, surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.
